St Torney’s, North Hill

About St Torney’s

St Torneys, North Hill, is recognised as a Grade 1 Church of great historical interest. As a result, it has been saved and restored by the Church Conservation Trust and re-opened in October 2024. St Torney’s has its own links to the Plantagenets. The Courtenay family, the Earls of Exeter, held the local manor of Landreyne in North Hill, just over the border from Devon. William Courtenay was to marry Katherine Plantagenet, (1495), the second youngest daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, sister to the Princes in the Tower and to Elizabeth of York, who became Henry VII’s queen. Details of the Neville & Courtenay badges can be found in the ceiling of the North Aisle. After this date, Trebartha Estate and the living of St Torney's is in the hands of the Spoure Family. Please note their beautiful memorial of c.1700.
