Mozart – Piano concerto in A major, K 414
Bartok – “Contrasts” for violin, clarinet and piano
Brahms – Clarinet quintet in B minor, op. 115
Late in life, Inspired by meeting the great clarinettist Richard Muhlfeld, Brahms came out of self-imposed retirement to write his autumnal masterpiece, the clarinet quintet. Almost fifty years years later, in an entirely changed world, jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman commissioned Bartok to write “Contrasts”, and in 1940 premiered the work in New York with Bartok himself at the piano.
