Jane Swan

I have painted in Cornwall since I was 5 years old.

I graduated from Falmouth School of Art in 1965. Now that I use a plant-based 'Acrylik' medium I want to push past the purists and call myself an English Watercolourist.... on a large scale... I am interested in the way the pigments/ materials that I use disperse in water....... be they powdered slate, beach sand, gravel, sea coal, shells or prehistoric peat....or of course out of a tube. I paint on unprimed canvas on a working stretcher on the floor. The canvas becomes taut like a drum when soaked in water. I use sponges, squeegee blade, a slip- trailer and brushes. I like to play with the way a colour calls for its complementary and only supply this in greys and browns, earths and metals. This is the engine that drives my work.
