Brilliant Mr Bach has been created especially for this year’s festival.
One of my passions is to share and reveal the power of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music, as fresh today as when it was written 300 years ago. In my experience (and particularly during lockdown), this music can become a friend for life.
Inspired by last year's huge success of Vivaldi’s “Seasons” at St Petroc’s, with
poems read by Sir Michael Morpurgo, this year we will bring JS Bach’s music to life in a new way, by imagining how he would introduce his works to today's audience.
On Sunday 19th July, by a miracle of time-travel, Bach - played by popular Poldark actor Rory Wilton- will visit Bodmin and join us at 4pm in St Petroc’s church.
Astonished at how much the world has changed, he will be pleased to discover that after 300 years, his music is still played and appreciated. (Having once been thrown into jail for displeasing an employer, he might be particularly impressed with the current living conditions at Bodmin Jail).
Ranging from delicate solo violin pieces to huge works for choir and full orchestra, Bach’s music can express joy, grief, earthiness, spirituality, intellect, intuition, strength, fragility and everything in between. Add to that an acute mathematical mind, a famously grumpy temperament and the fathering of 20 children, and you have Bach the man.
Together with me, our fantastic musicians will collaborate with Rory, who is perfect for the role of the composer.
